# Resilience Web

A Resilience Web is a holistic visualisation of environmental and social justice groups in a place, curated by people who live there. These webs are intended to help the discovery, collaboration and networking between activists and groups around issues that they care about.

# How to get involved

There are lots of ways you can help out, and we'd love for you to join in however you like! If you enjoy coding, we always welcome volunteer developers. If not, there are plenty of other ways you can contribute and be a valuable part of our project.

Here are some ways you can help out:

* Create a new web (see the guide in the side bar) for your location.
* Attend our [online monthly assembly](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/resilience-web-monthly-assembly-tickets-1220916868219) where you can ask questions and get to know us.
* Submit bug reports or feature requests on our [Github repository](https://github.com/ResilienceWeb/resilience-web/issues).
* Donate to our [Open Collective](https://opencollective.com/resilience-web). We especially welcome recurring contributions.
* Share and talk about Resilience Web to communities who may benefit from using it.
* Create a use case using the 'tags' feature on any Resilience Web, for example, '[A penny saved](https://resilienceweb.org.uk/news/a-penny-saved)' on the Cambridge Resilience Web.

If there's another way you'd like to contribute, please get in touch at <info@resilienceweb.org.uk>

# FAQ

Frequently asked questions

### What stage is the project in?

We currently have more than 15 webs across England and Wales, and we feel that the Resilience Web is still in its early days. We are actively developing more features and we would love your input and feedback to help improve the platform.

### How do you fund your work?

We have an [Open Collective](https://opencollective.com/resilience-web) where we receive very small donations that just about manage to pay for the hosting costs. For our first 4 years, we’ve been building the platform for free.

In the spring of 2025, we signed a contract with the [Cambridge Room](https://cambridgeroom.org) to develop webs throughout Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

### Is Resilience Web incorporated?

We've been incorporated as a Community Interest Company since January 2024. We've done that so that we're able to apply for more grants in order to fund our work.

### I'd like to set up a Web for my town. How do I get started?

You can go to [our website homepage](https://resilienceweb.org.uk) and click the Create a new web link. If at any point anything is unclear or you'd like to chat to us or ask questions you can book a training session [here](https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0/appointments/schedules/AcZssZ3POx5B9YlGkzuVp02JmN0Vb_9U5HMOy5MMPi5818YomktgkhdQ3ijmh14rL0gm6aOc5_7uuEvb).

* That location is then displayed on the individual listing page

  <figure><img src="https://2358781518-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FLdurQx7juOGUdYxTn7zK%2Fuploads%2F0gwj709k5XdpTu1y0J97%2FCleanShot%202024-11-08%20at%2012.25.55.png?alt=media&amp;token=03368573-b4d7-4c03-b340-43db298d42d9" alt="" width="545"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

We will work on displaying all the listings together in the map, stay tuned :raised\_hands: In the meantime, please add the location to as many listings as you can. Of course, there are many organisations that don't have a fixed address, in which case there's no need to do so. We will find a way to display them in/alongside the Map view either way.

# Contributing to a web

Everyone can contribute to Resilience Web — you don't need to be part of a web's team. These guides cover what you can do as a visitor: propose a new listing, suggest changes to an existing one, or embed a web on your own website.

# Proposing a listing

If you are aware of a group that is not represented in a particular web, you can click the "Propose new listing" button on the left sidebar as you are viewing the web.

<figure><img src="https://2358781518-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FLdurQx7juOGUdYxTn7zK%2Fuploads%2FjxPsw0cSwaJfsUffwasZ%2FCleanShot%202024-02-13%20at%2008.38.41.png?alt=media&amp;token=480ab26a-8059-4e9f-a75b-4edfbc7978ac" alt=""><figcaption><p>Screenshot displaying Propose new listing button</p></figcaption></figure>

Once you do so, you will be taken to a page where you can enter the details of the listing you want to propose.<br>

<figure><img src="https://2358781518-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FLdurQx7juOGUdYxTn7zK%2Fuploads%2Fxyjz83teSxe3YxXBpddw%2FCleanShot%202024-02-13%20at%2008.41.28.png?alt=media&amp;token=a1d0ebad-0fc5-4cb6-97fa-89bc2c03f5c8" alt=""><figcaption><p>Screenshot of Propose new listing page</p></figcaption></figure>

Once it's submitted, admins of that particular web will see your proposed listing in a 'Pending' state, which will allow them to review the submission, and approve it if they wish to.<br>

<figure><img src="https://2358781518-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FLdurQx7juOGUdYxTn7zK%2Fuploads%2FsWLBramflsQCS6dbuv4k%2FCleanShot%202024-02-13%20at%2008.45.53.png?alt=media&amp;token=bac6912e-3b44-4f61-8ec6-2cd7cebe2882" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Suggesting changes to a listing

Starting December 2024, people can now suggest changes (like adding missing info or corrections) to any listing on the Resilience Web. Anyone can do that, whether or not they are admins of that particular web. These changes will require approval from an admin with editor permissions in order to be applied.

On any individual listing page, press the Blue button on the bottom right.

# Embedding Resilience Web on other websites

If you have a website and want to embed a particular Resilience Web on it, read on to find out how you can do that.

#### Prerequisites

* Access to your website's code
* Basic skills for editing your website's HTML code

1. Get the URL for the web you want to embed. For example, `https://york.resilienceweb.org.uk` for the York web.
2. Copy the following code wherever you want the web to be displayed, with your web URL instead of the example one provided. The width and height set are just examples, adjust those to make it fit your website best.

```
<iframe
  src="https://york.resilienceweb.org.uk"
  title="York Resilience Web"
  width="500"
  height="400">
</iframe>
```

# Your Resilience Web

We’re glad you’re interested in creating a web for your community! This guide will walk you through the process of creating a web. Your web will be an online space that will create a map of community groups. The exact focus of the web is up to you — resilience has many different meanings to different people, whether adapting to the climate crisis, strengthening community bonds, or ensuring everyone can thrive. What does your community need?

The Resilience Web is an online directory that helps you raise the visibility of community groups, helping new volunteers find them, and also helping groups find each other to potentially collaborate on larger projects.

The Cambridge Web is focused on mapping the many groups in Cambridge whose goals are broadly related to sustainability and social justice.

The rest of this guide will give you many ideas for how to think about creating the web as a collaboration with your community, and the possibilities to strengthen community connections that having the web will create.

# Your Community

### Your Community

Who is your community? It could be your town or city. Most of the webs are centered around towns, you could also be connected in a different way, for example, the web could be focused on a river’s catchment area.

Your community might be united by something other than geography. We don’t have any examples at present, but don’t want to exclude the idea of creating a web of festivals, for example.

The purpose of creating a web is to serve your community, and you might want to try something we haven’t though of yet. Great!

Feel free to attend our Monthly Assembly to discuss your use case, and to ask any questions you have.

### Collaboration

Building a web is a community effort and we recommend that you work together with at least one other person on your Resilience Web. We all have different strengths, and working with a team of founding members can help ensure that someone is happy to focus on the technical details, and someone else is happy to meet many of the community groups and to be the face of your web.

Working with someone also means redundancy is built into your web from the beginning, and redundancy is one aspect of resilience.

### Finding collaborators

If you don’t have collaborators in mind, here are some approaches to find people who might be interested:

* Attend the meetings of local groups and ask for 5 minutes to present the Resilience Web and make the case for one local to your area. At the end of your presentation, ask if anyone would like to join you in creating the web.
* Host a working meeting to create the web. Schedule a time, perhaps in a local community center, when you will create the web and begin to add entries to it. Advertise your event, and see who turns up.
* Build it and they will come. Sometimes it can be difficult to find folks who are interested, and it can be easier to capture the imagination of people if you already have something concrete to show them. Go ahead and create your web, show it to people and encourage them to contribute entries that fill in the gaps you have missed.

### Guiding Principles

There are three principles that guide the creation of a team of founding members:

* There is no hierarchy; the Resilience Web is co-produced through consensus by your founding members in service of your community.
* Everyone has a voice and is heard.
* The focus of the web is on collaboration and on bringing people together.

# Create your web

### Name your web

Decide on a name for your web, generally the name of the town or city you’re in, and follow the [Create a Web](/guides/managing-your-web/create-a-web) to create a web.

### Banner image

You will also want to add a banner image that will appear for your web on the front page. Start thinking about what will represent your web well — maybe the skyline of your town, or a local nature spot. Please use a photo that you have taken or own the rights to.

### Categories

You probably have some idea of the broad categories of listings that you will have on your web. Your web will come by default with the following categories, which you are free to modify, delete and add to however you want. Create categories that are useful and meaningful to your community.

* Community
* Education
* Environment
* Food
* Health
* Human rights
* Social justice

The categories can be modified, renamed, deleted and added as you go, and you might find that some merge or split as you begin adding listings to your web.

### Neighbouring Webs

You can link to neighbouring webs directly from your web. Are there any you want to include?

### Play around and experiment

When you first create your web it is available only to people who know the link so that you can populate it and make it an interesting space before going live. It will only be listed on the main page after it is published (see [Go live](/guides/managing-your-web/go-live)), so feel free to experiment and change things!

# Add community groups

### Boundaries

What listings should be included on your web?

If your web is for a town, you might want to choose a clear geographic boundary and only include organisations operating within the boundary. Anything that’s outside might be better included on a neighbouring web.

Secondly, consider the conceptual boundaries of your web. The Resilience Web is generally for environment and social justice community groups, but you can define exactly what this means for your community. Sport and fitness clubs, art groups, child play groups all build connection and community resilience in different ways.

Some examples include:

* The Cambridge web has chosen not to include religious groups unless they specifically have a subgroup that is working directly in one of these areas, for example.
* The South West London web has a focus on disaster response.
* The water web (still under development) for groups that are working on water issues in the River Cam catchment area has a much broader geographic area, but a much narrower conceptual boundary. We encourage creative ways of thinking about the webs.

### Find community groups

You probably know about a lot of groups working on the intersectional goals of environmental and social justice in your area already. These are great starting points for adding to your Resilience Web.

To scope out other organisations that you may not know about, we have a few strategies:

* Begin with your team and brainstorm all the community groups that serve your community in various ways.
* Talk to people in your area, tell them you are making a Resilience Web, and find out what groups they think should be included.
* Check out what’s happening at your local pub or community center, who is running evenings or events?
* Try doing a web search for the name of your town and each of the categories you identified in the previous step. This might help you find groups you didn’t know about.
* Research the groups you know about. Look on their website, have they run events in collaboration with anyone else? Should their collaborators be included on your web too?
* Attend events put on by the groups in your area. Who else is attending, and do they represent other groups that should be included?

To add a listing, follow the howto guide: [Add listings](/guides/managing-your-web/add-listings)

You do not need to contact groups in advance to add them to your web.

# Launch your web

### Ready to launch?

You will be ready to launch when your web is an interesting and useful place. Generally, this means you have about 10 listings, but in very small towns you might not be able to find more than this. If you’ve tried several of the methods suggested for finding new groups and keep coming up with the same old ones over again, then you’re ready to launch. In large cities, there’s no need to have a comprehensive list of all the groups before you launch. You can always continue to add groups after you launch.

Follow the howto guide to launch your web: [Go live](/guides/managing-your-web/go-live)

# Advertise your web

### Your web is done! Congratulations!

Now it’s time to tell the world about it.

We have several suggestions for ways to communicate your web out to the wider world. You can do some or all of these, as is appropriate for your community. If you have other ideas for advertising that work well for you, please let us know and we’ll add them to this list.

### Neighbouring Webs

Get in touch with the owners of neighbouring webs (if there are any) and ask them to include your web as a neighbouring web on their web.

### In person events

* Host a launch event (we have some funding to support webs in Cambridgeshire).
* Attend local conferences or events and promote the Resilience Web either by handing out flyers or giving a talk.
* Attend local fairs and share a booth with other community groups or hand out flyers to attendees.
* Talk to the local council

### Physical advertising

* Ads in local papers
* Physical posters
* Flyers
* Stickers

### Online advertising

* When your web is ready to launch, we will advertise it to our mailing list and social media.
* Encourage groups to embed your web or link back to the Resilience Web from their own websites. More information is available in our guide: [Embedding Resilience Web on other websites](/guides/contributing-to-a-web/embedding-resilience-web-on-other-websites)
* Social media — we have a set of templates that you are welcome to use.

# Maintain your web

Groups will come and go, and keeping your web current will be a small maintenance task when you learn about changes.

Stay connected to the groups that are on your web, visit their events.

Suggestions for more ways to connect with your community:

* Subscribe to the newsletters and social media of the groups on your web — it's an easy way to hear about changes, new projects and collaborations.
* Attend local events and fairs from time to time; they are a good way to discover new groups and to hear which ones have wound down.
* Ask the groups themselves to check their listing once in a while and suggest corrections — anyone can suggest changes to a listing, not just your team.
* Share maintenance across your team, so keeping things current doesn't rely on one person.

### Let your community help

You don't have to do all the work yourself. Visitors to your web can propose new listings and suggest changes to existing ones, and these come to your team for review:

* **Proposed listings** appear on your Listings page in a “Pending” state, where you can review and approve them.
* **Suggested edits** appear against the relevant listing, where you can compare the changes side by side and accept or reject them.

Try to review these regularly — a quick response is encouraging for the people contributing to your web.

### Keep listings in good shape

A few features in the admin dashboard help you keep quality up:

* The Listings page highlights listings that are missing an image or have a very short description, so you can see at a glance which ones need attention.
* If a group pauses its activities, you can mark its listing as **inactive** to hide it from the public web without losing the information.
* You can **feature** a listing to pin it to the top of the page for a while — useful for highlighting groups with upcoming events or campaigns.

# Managing your web

These guides are for web owners and editors. They cover the practical, step-by-step tasks you'll do in the admin dashboard, from creating your web to keeping it up to date.

# Create a Web

This guide will walk you through creating a new web.

1. On <https://resilienceweb.org.uk> click the button “Create a new web” at the end of the listing of existing webs

![](https://2358781518-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FLdurQx7juOGUdYxTn7zK%2Fuploads%2FFlCeI8kSAGjwO4c4267T%2FIMG_3326.jpeg?alt=media\&token=5774e9ba-976f-4be9-b23a-0142bba41c9d)

2. You will be asked to sign up with your name and the email address you want to use to manage the web.
3. We will email you a one-time sign-in code. Enter the code on the verification page to sign in. You do not need a password — each time you sign in, we send a fresh code to your email. Note that each code expires after 10 minutes, but you can always request a new one.
4. You will then be taken to a welcome form that asks for the following information, all of which can be changed later in Web Settings:
   1. the title of the web (e.g. the name of your town)
   2. the link for your web (e.g. york.resilienceweb.org.uk) — this is generated automatically from the title, but you can change it
   3. a contact email where people can reach your team with questions or feedback
   4. a description for the web
   5. a location for the web
5. Press “Get started” and you will be taken to the admin dashboard of your new web, where a short tour will show you around.
6. You can now add listings, edit categories, and set the banner image for your web.
7. If you are collaborating with people on the web, you can invite them from the Team page.

# Update the banner image

The banner image (also called the cover image) is the picture that represents your web on the [resilienceweb.org.uk](https://resilienceweb.org.uk) homepage. Choose a photo that represents your web well — maybe the skyline of your town, or a local nature spot. Please use a photo that you have taken or own the rights to.

To update it:

1. Sign in to the admin dashboard and go to **Web Settings** (only web owners can access this page).
2. Upload or replace the picture in the **Image** section.
3. Press **Update** to save your changes.

# Create and edit categories

Every listing on your web belongs to a category, and the category determines the colour of the listing on the web. New webs come with a set of default categories (Community, Education, Environment, Food, Health, Human rights, Social justice) which you are free to rename, delete and add to however you want.

To manage categories, sign in to the admin dashboard and go to the **Categories** page. From there you can:

* **Add** a new category
* **Edit** an existing category, where you can change its name, colour and icon
* **Delete** a category you no longer need

If you set a custom icon for a category, it will also be used for the markers in the Map view (for webs that have the map enabled).

# Add and update neighbouring webs

If there are other webs that are close geographically or related to yours in some way, you can link to them so that visitors can discover them from your web.

1. Sign in to the admin dashboard and go to **Web Settings** (only web owners can access this page).
2. Scroll down to the **Related/neighbouring webs** section and select the webs you want to link to.

<figure><img src="https://2358781518-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FLdurQx7juOGUdYxTn7zK%2Fuploads%2F0l1SGS1yFbssOh8VC16M%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=bf3b8f33-2fb9-4da1-8524-af6054a40341" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

3. Press **Update** to save your changes.

The linked webs will appear on your web as clickable items, like this:

<figure><img src="https://2358781518-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FLdurQx7juOGUdYxTn7zK%2Fuploads%2FYdYOrNK6zuGuOZyVp7W9%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=a2f108b3-3726-4055-896b-32352badb387" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Add listings

To add a listing, sign in to the admin dashboard and press the “New listing” button on the Listings page.

For each listing, you will need the following information:

* **Title** — the name of the group or organisation (required)
* **Category** — one of your web's categories (required)
* **Description** — a short description of what the group does (required). You can format the text, and even add images or embed videos.
* **Image** — a photo or logo that represents the group
* **Contact email for organisation** — if your web has a contact email set in Web Settings, we will send a courtesy email to this address letting the group know their listing was created
* **Website** and **social media links** — Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter and more
* **Location** — where the group is based, so it can appear on the map. Some groups don't have a fixed address, in which case you can tick “No physical location”.

There are also a few optional extras:

* **Tags** — cross-category labels that visitors can filter by. You can create new tags directly from the listing form.
* **Related listings** — link the listing to other groups it is connected to; these are shown on the listing page and visualised on the web.
* **Currently seeking volunteers** — displays a badge on the listing, and visitors can filter the web to show only groups looking for volunteers.
* **Mark as inactive** — hides the listing from the public web without deleting it, useful for groups that have paused their activities.

Once you have added a listing, there might be a slight delay before it appears on the web.

# Go live

Publishing a web is currently a manual process — we review each web before it goes live. When your web is ready to share with the world, please email <info@resilienceweb.org.uk> and we'll review and publish it for you.

Before getting in touch, please make sure that:

* your web has at least 10 listings with complete information and images
* your web has a cover image uploaded in Web Settings
* the contact email field in Web Settings is filled out

Until your web is published, it is only visible to people who have the link, so you can experiment freely while you build it up.

Once your web goes live, it will be listed on the main page at [resilienceweb.org.uk](https://resilienceweb.org.uk), and we will also advertise it to our mailing list and on social media.

# More support

For help, you can get in touch using the Get in Touch link in the top right of the page <https://resilienceweb.org.uk/>. We are happy to answer your questions and to respond to feature requests!

You are welcome to attend our Monthly Assembly, the last Friday of the month at 12:30 to meet us online and ask any questions you have.
